Bachelor of Science, Public Health Education
  Concentration Description  
 

The Public Health Education concentration prepares graduates for professional positions in public health agencies, community-based organizations, health care, tribal health, and international organizations.  The curriculum is competency based in compliance with standards set by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.  Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) national examination administered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.  To view or print the CHES Responsibilities and Competencies List, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader loaded on your computer. If you do not, you may go to the Adobe Acrobat Web Site to download the application. 

The overall goal of the Public Health Education program is to educate and train enrolled students to become public and community health education specialists who are culturally competent professionals able to apply systems theory to prevent disease and promote the health of the public through the development of diverse leadership that advances individual, social, and ecological health. The objectives are to:

  • Prepare students for successful completion of the Certified Health Education Specialist examination.
  • Promote undergraduate education as a foundation and stimulus for graduate study.
  • Cultivate a dedication to independent learning, intellectual query, and professional growth.
  • Prepare graduates for careers in public and community health education in community-based organizations, corporate health, and governmental agencies.
  • Prepare graduates to integrate research findings into practice settings.
  • Prepare graduates to assume leadership within the health education profession.
  • Partner with others in planning, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs.
Upon completion of our program in Public Health Education students will be able to:
  1. Assess Individual and Community Needs for Health Education
  2. Plan Health Education Strategies, Interventions and Programs
  3. Implement Health Education Strategies, Interventions, and Programs
  4. Conduct Evaluation and Research Related to Health Education
  5. Administer Health Education Strategies, Interventions, and Programs
  6. Serve as a Health Education Resource Person
  7. Communicate and Advocate for Health and Health Education
