Graduate Admissions
Admission to the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program
 
  Application must be made to the University for admission to the University, AND to the Department for admission to the MPH program.  In addition to the general requirements of the university, specific requirements for admission to the MPH program  as classified graduate status are:  
  1. An official report of the GRE certificate  
  2. Copies of college transcripts  
  3. 3.0 GPA in last 60 semester units (90 quarter units)  
  4. Completion of the graduate entrance writing requirement;  
  5. Three letters of recommendation, to be evaluated by faculty members in the program.  
  6. Statement of purpose  
  Up to 12 quarter units of previous coursework may be approved for transfer credit as long as they were not counted towards a previous degree.  These units must come from a CEPH accredited public health program.  However, credit is only available for equivalent courses, as demonstrated by the course syllabus, content, and assignments.  Approval of previous units is done on an individual basis by MPH faculty advisors and then by the Graduate Studies Division.   Advisor signature is required for enrollment in initial courses.   
     
  Advancement to Candidacy  
  In order to be advanced to candidacy, the student must have:  
  1.

Achieved classified standing;

 
  2.

Completed at least 16 quarter units of acceptable course work at this university, with the approval of the advisors and with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 ("B").

Note: Between the time of completing 16 units and 20 units of applicable course work the student is required to apply for advancement to candidacy.
 

 
  3.

Filed a formal program of study of graduate course work prepared in consultation with the major advisor and approved by the MPH graduate coordinator of the Department of Health Science and Human Ecology. 

 
     
  Requirements for Graduation  
  1.

A minimum of 60 units of approved graduate-level work included in the formal program

 
  2.

Advancement to candidacy for the degree and approval of the specific program study;

 
  3.

A grade point average of 3.0 ("B") in course work taken to satisfy the Master of Public Health degree requirements

 
  4. The graduation writing requirement is met upon successful completion of the research thesis or a project; or by passing the comprehensive exam.  
The thesis or project represents independent graduate research conducted under the guidance of an advisor from the Department of Health Science and Human Ecology.  The purpose of the thesis or project is for the student to demonstrate competency in the planning, implementation and analysis of applied research  as it relates to the student's area of interest.  The thesis or project proposal and the thesis or project must be approved by the faculty advisor in the Department of Health Science and Human Ecology and submitted in an approved format.  Further information is available from the Office of Graduate Studies regarding an approved format for the thesis or project proposal and thesis or project.


The program may not include more than 12 quarter units in transfer credit from other colleges.  California State University, San Bernardino will not consider for transfer credit course work from an institution which will not accept that work in its own advanced degree program.
